USA Hapkido Union Philosophy Lesson 7 with Instructor Ma

HAPKIDO PHILOSOPHY OF REASON Welcome to your philosophy and culture lesson for today from the USA Hapkido Union. I am Instructor Ma, your USA Hapkido Union language, culture, and character development teacher. Today’s Lesson is sponsored by www.USAHapkidoUnion.org In today’s lesson we discuss Hapkido philosophy of reason. This series is to teach us some of the reasons that martial artists should study philosophy.

This lesson comes from the book, “Be a Life Champion: The Martial Arts Way”. Let’s begin. Reason. Another philosophical question concerns reason. Generally, reason is how people understand their role in the world and how they treat each other. The relevance to martial artist is that in martial art practice, the martial artist must be able to use reason in both their understanding and their relationships in class. In a style where there are various belt levels, there is a hierarchy of roles and responsibilities. Beginners learn the basics and higher belts learn more advanced techniques. Each student has a role, but it is not permanent. They have the opportunity to move ahead, advance, grow and succeed. Martial artists who study the concept of reason in philosophy gain a broader understanding of why their behaviors and actions are self-fulfilling, meaning failure for those who do not try, but success for those who thrive. Accountability is borne from reason. As Hapkido practitioners we learn to understand the primary difference between logic and reason is that reason is subject to personal moral judgement and opinion, whereas logic is an actual science that follows clearly defined rules and tests for critical thinking. Logic also seeks tangible, visible proof of a sound thought process by reasoning.
