HAPKIDO PHILOSOPHY FUNDAMENTAL TRUTHS Welcome to your philosophy and culture lesson for today from the USA Hapkido Union. I am Instructor Ma, your USA Hapkido Union language, culture, and character development teacher. Today’s Lesson is sponsored by www.USAHapkidoUnion.org In today’s lesson we discuss Fundamental Truths.
This series is to teach us some of the reasons that martial artists should study philosophy. This lesson comes from the book, “Be a Life Champion: The Martial Arts Way”. Let’s begin. Fundamental Truths. Many know this one well-known phrase that shapes a lot of philosophical thinking: “I think, therefore I am,” meaning I can think, therefore I exist. When practicing a martial art, one feels their own existence in the moment. This fundamental philosophical truth brings immediate attention to one’s own existence in the world, just as martial art practice brings the martial art practitioner into the moment. The martial artist who studies the fundamental truths in philosophy recognizes the importance of balance between body and mind and makes them more knowledgeable and worldlier about their own existence so they can continue to grow in their practice. Understanding one’s existence as a martial artist becomes defined more clearly via this philosophical mindset. Therefore, Hapkido practitioners understand that fundamental truth serves as the foundation for a system of belief or behavior or for a chain of reasoning. A moral rule of belief that helps you know what is right and what is wrong and influences your actions. Anyone practicing Hapkido without mastering its philosophy as well in not a true Hapkido practitioner. They are merely a person of low character who has learned some moves.
