12 Self Defense or Self Protection Ideas by Nathan Lambright

12 Self Defense or Self Protection Ideas by Nathan Lambright

Some basic things a person can do for self-defense might not be what you think. Not every person becomes a martial arts master.

No. 1: Prevention

Prevention can be a first step in self-defense. A person is aware of their surroundings and uses prevention to stay in areas they feel safe. This means walking or parking in well-lit areas. Only a few examples.

No. 2: Using your Door Locks

Lock your car after you get in. Lock your front door. A person will often get in their car and sit there scrolling on their phone unaware that someone could be watching, and an unlocked car door will allow someone to enter the passenger side to threaten you or tell you where to go.

No. 3 Drinking

When drinking be mindful of drinking around strangers. Setting down a drink and coming back for it later could result in someone slipping in a date rape drug. When going on a date or party please inform some close friends where you are going, and what you plan to do. Be mindful to keep your phone charged in case of emergency.

No. 4: Vulnerability

This might be different for different people. However, the most vulnerable areas in most humans are the eyes, nose, mouth throat, and groin. These are the areas that will need the most protection when attacked. Other things to remember are what you yourself know you are vulnerable to. This could be drinking, partying, walking alone etc. People will seem the most vulnerable when leaving a bar alone and walking down a back alley. A poorly dressed woman, or a drunk man may get robbed or beaten since they appear more vulnerable than someone whose is not drunk.

No. 5 Knowledge

Knowledge is personal power. It will help make you safer and increase the chance of survival. Basic understanding will go a long way.

No. 6 Strong Body Language

Telling someone with a loud voice to stay back, while keeping your feet shoulder width apart with your hands up in front and your palms facing forward. This is using strong and confident body language.

No. 7 Groin Kick

When a person keeps advancing and you fear for your life. Bring either one of your legs straight up the middle as hard as you can and kick the groin. It is one of the most sensitive areas of the body.

No. 8 Hammer Fist

Hammer fist is when you swing your arms down like a hammer and hit the person across the front of the nose, jaw or temple. In most cases you will want to strike as hard as possible and then run.

No. 9 Palm Strike

The palm strike can be very powerful if used properly. We all know how it feels when you get smacked with an open palm. When using this do not make a fist but rather leave your palm open and smack the person as hard as possible on the side of the head or jaw thus stunning them and allowing you to follow up with a groin kick or running.

No. 10 Weapons

Your car keys are weapons. When using the hammer fist close your fist tightly and let the key hit the person in the head when striking. You may hit them in the eyes and thus blind them and allow you to escape. Your purse can act as an extension of the arm. Swinging your purse and hitting someone in the face can be very painful especially if you keep a couple golf balls or another hard object in the side pocket.

No. 11 Stability

Do not allow yourself to be taken off balance if possible. Being solid and having good footing will help you in delivering a hit or taking a hit. If you are a right-handed person a good footing would be having the right foot about two-foot lengths behind the left foot and shoulder width apart.

No. 12 Strengths and Weaknesses = The amount of Confidence

Most importantly you need to know what you are comfortable in doing. If you do not feel comfortable in using your arms and legs in self-defense you might feel confidence by having pepper spray, or a lipstick taser. Understanding this can help create a confident feeling. So, being confident can be the first step in taking care of yourself.
