The Structure of Legitimate Martial Arts Organizations by Instructor Ma

In this article I will cover all six of these levels so that you will have a better understanding of how things work.

The first level in the structure is private training from teacher to student. 

This system of learning from Master to Disciple is centuries old and is considered a highly effective method of learning.

The second level is to be a member of a club, which is a teacher who teaches group lessons at a public facility, such as a church hall, local gym, or community center. 

The club is often a branch of a local school.

The third level is a martial arts school or “Dojang” in Korean. 

A Dojang is much more prestigious than a Training Center or “JaeYookKwan”. 

School is an instructor offering private and group lessons at a facility that he manages that is exclusively for the school. 

The fourth level is a Kwan or style. 

That is when a group of clubs and schools practice the same style, and use the same curriculum to maintain the integrity of their art.

The fifth level is a union or association, which is a group of styles who work cooperatively as a joint venture to be the governing body in their nation for that art.

The sixth level is often called a federation or alliance, which would be a group of national organizations working as a joint venture to be the international governing body for a style.
